“Bollocks” and “Crap” – Archaeological Jargon?**

Over on boorish Warsaw Wally’s blog the old duffer quotes a Dig Venture Tweet: “Archaeology is not so much about things, it’s about communities, if you find a knife, it’s about who used it, how they made it, where they got the materials from.”

His take on the Tweet is that its message, “seems to have got lost in all that PAS crap.” Hmm, very scholarly. In another example of arkie-speak, he reckons the Ixelles Six – the team of international experts who academically roasted his pal Sam Hardy’s anti-metal detecting Paper – talk “Bollocks.”

The author of the original Tweet, and Wally, are bang on the money. Archaeology is all about communities, and demonstrated it can’t be fully trusted with “things”; just look at the on-going chaos created by unfit-for-purpose storing and recording facilities, a scandal Wally himself highlighted some months ago.

“Things” is what metal detecting’s all about…it’s why there’s a Portable Antiquities Scheme database, it’s why nearly 1.5million detector-found artefacts are on the PAS database. It’s the reason why 657 research and academic projects ranging from Master’s Degree level through to A-Level archaeology are based on the data gleaned from detector-found artefacts.

Precisely how many projects, you may wonder, are based on the heavily discredited Artefact Erosion Counter (AEC) he’s always at pains to quote, is unclear; though some have had a rough ride for taking its ersatz figures too seriously.

Presumably the AEC – using Wally’s archaeological terminology – could well be described as “crap” and those who espouse it as talking “bollocks” ?

**JARGON: noun
The language peculiar to a particular trade, profession, or group.

  1. Hi Jim:
I’m told the old duffer is ‘promoting’ the video Garrett shot in England of me explaining the controls on the ATpro International. Perhaps he’s looking to buy one and hoping for a bit of a discount?
    All the best & HH
